Welcome to DINZ. The new council term has officially begun and I have just taken up the mantle of DINZ President, a role I will hold for the next two years.

This is a role I’m particularly passionate about and one where I’m keen to make my mark. But first I must thank Leanne Beard for her achievements especially her progress with the LBP initiative and leading the Design Council so well in her time as president. And thank you too to Cathy Veninga, CEO of DINZ, who continues to work tirelessly to ensure the Institute is an exciting, innovative organisation to be part of.

I began my design career in 1992 after graduating from the Otago School of Fine and Applied Art and then the Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT). It has been an action packed ride since then with too many all-nighters under my belt to count, which, to be fair, is par for the cause in this game. My creative experience is reasonably extensive and includes brand development, design strategy and campaign development both here in GodZone and in London. I have also exhibited my ceramic sculptures in several group and solo exhibitions in New Zealand and remain passionate and optimistic about the value and impact that strategic design has on business globally. I am currently a Creative Director and part-owner of Base Two in Wellington.

Three years ago I joined DINZ with the intention of rolling my sleeves up, putting my money where my mouth is and helping to identify how we could build upon our professional position to ensure continued growth and development as an effective organisation for our members, industry and audiences.

That’s where you come in. I’m keen to hear from DINZ members about what you think makes DINZ unique and how we can add even more value for you as members and also to our professional industry in general.  If you have ideas for events and professional development sessions or DINZ led initiatives then email me anytime at designer@dinz.org.nz

As part of my commitment to ongoing communication I’ll be writing a monthly web column; keeping you up to date with our achievements, upcoming events and interesting snippets about what your fellow members have achieved and have to say about design in New Zealand and the world.

I’m particularly keen to see the results of this year’s BeST Awards, which always inspire me about the future of New Zealand’s design movement. I’m sure your feedback and comments will too.
