A word from the President - June 2010

Being a member of the Designers Institute, the official organisation representing New Zealand designers, has many benefits and should be a serious consideration for designers and students of design.

We the People.
The Designers Institute Board is revamping our constitution so it rightly reflects us as a fresh, inclusive, business-led organisation with strong aspirations.

The new constitution will be unveiled and voted on at our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 29 July in Auckland. The only catch is that to vote you need to be a Professional Member, PDINZ of the Institute.

What are the benefits for members?

Credibility
When your creativity and reputation is your career, then credibility is essential. And credibility is what you’ll get by being a member of the Institute. We have four levels of membership, which require certain professional obligations to be met. These are Member, MDINZ; Professional Member, PDINZ (which is awarded via a peer review system): Fellow, FDINZ and Life Membership, LifeDINZ which you can use in your own professional practice. We also believe in supporting the new generation of designers as members and have a Student Member, StudentMDINZ and Graduate Member, GraduateMDINZ

Design education
The Designers Institute runs a continuing professional education programme, the Design Series, to help build our members’ skills, knowledge and expertise regardless of where you’re at in your career.

Part of the benefit of a Designers Institute membership is also the informal learning opportunities that come from meeting regularly with other designers – exposure to exciting new design disciplines, ways of working and of course meeting with your design community.  It’s very collegial.

Upcoming Events
One of the things I enjoy most about being a member is the number of events we hold. It’s a great chance to meet other designers and check out what’s happening in our sector. Here are some upcoming events not to miss:

• Friday 9 July - entries for the 2010 Best Design Awards close. Late entries accepted until 5pm on Wednesday July 14 (but it'll cost you an extra $50 per entry).

• Wednesday 21 July - in Christchurch, Designers Speak - Two Plus One: three designers in conversation, which will provoke thought and discussion.

• Wednesday 7 July and 4 August - in Auckland, commercial designers speak about how we shape our office and how our office shapes us.

• Wednesday 1 September Christchurch and Thursday 2 September Dunedin – Designers Speak – This & That showcasing the unexpected and delicious as from the creative sector
