2010 BEST DESIGN AWARDS OPEN FOR ENTRY

New Zealand designers take note. The 2010 Best Design Awards – the Oscars of the New Zealand design world - are now open for entry, with this year’s awards boasting a shiny new logo and a brand new category.

Now in their 22nd year, the Best Design Awards, which are organised by the Designers Institute of New Zealand, recognise New Zealand’s best designs from the past year across the categories of product, graphic and spatial design.

And now, for the first time ever, the prestigious design awards have been expanded to include a whole new sector – interactive design.

Previously a subcategory of the graphic design discipline, the new interactive section of the awards includes six subcategories, which include:

• TIME BASED GRAPHICS - Animated or moving image graphic design created for film, broadcast, TV, internet or in-house videos;
• LARGE SCALE WEBSITES – Budgets over 20K;
• SMALL SCALE WEBSITES – Budgets under 20K;
• APPLICATIONS - Kiosks, Mobile Applications, Games, and Web Applications;
• INTERACTIVE MARKETING - Components supporting a larger marketing campaign, including microsites, rich banners, or interactive elements for existing websites, and;
• STUDENT

Che Tamahori, managing director at leading Auckland based interactive design agency, Shift, and the judging convenor of the brand spanking new interactive design category, said the time was right for interactive to have its own standalone section in the awards.

“The New Zealand interactive industry has really come of age over the past couple of years,” says Tamahori. “By breaking interactive design out from the graphics category where it has been for a number of years, it enables us as an industry to address and celebrate the quality and breadth of work coming out of this burgeoning sector.”

Designers wishing to enter this year’s Best Design Awards can do so online at www.bestawards.co.nz, where they’ll also find detailed information on each of the award disciplines and categories.

Entry into this year’s Best Design Awards closes at 5.00 pm on Wednesday, 9th July 2010, with the award winners announced at a black tie event in Auckland on October 8, 2010.
