Otago Institute of Design (OID), and works directly with industry groups, community organisations and individuals to develop new design-related capabilities in the Otago region and beyond. Projects to date have involved Interaction Design, Product and Service Design, Sustainable Design and Strategic Design. Our teams have worked with several museums in the region to design and build educational interactive museum exhibits and our Evolver project uses design, R&D and prototyping to create intellectual property, new products, and ‘proof of concept’ at the earliest stages of the product innovation cycle.  SHAC (Sustainable Habitat Challenge) drives regional teams to create and undertake more sustainable design solutions in our building and every-day living.

Business development and innovation
OID works with creative individuals to develop innovation opportunities within product and fashion. The Dunedin fashion incubator stimulates entrepreneurial activity and encourages small business growth for those in the fashion industry while others can access further resources and expertise at the Product Development Centre which houses state of the art prototyping facilities. Further opportunities for businesses exist through Design Steps Otago, a programme which employs strategic design thinking to encourage change and enable competitive advantage.

Education at the Otago Institute of Design
Education is at the heart of the Otago Institute of Design are conscious of maintaining graduate and post-graduate courses in New Zealand’s ‘Education City’ that are interesting, relevant, and continue to lead the way in the highly competitive national and international education scenes. Our difference from other design education providers is that we offer students and graduates ongoing design-led opportunities through our associated facilities and services including small business and product development, an in-house design studio and strong relationships with local and international industry-related collaborators. Our under graduate and post graduate students are routinely employed to undertake design-led OiD projects through the Applied Design Research Centre and newSplash studio.
