AFTER THE CRASH ? IS DESIGN IN CRISIS? WHAT ARE THE FORCES DRIVING THAT CRISIS? WHAT ARE THE WAYS OUT?

At INNOVATIONZ we see part of our role as a Think Tank on behalf of the design professions. This in turn means being sensitive to current issues and helping to build a WELL INFORMED community.

Our work focuses on NPD and innovation with special attention to the challenges of NZ small businesses. Our core skills and knowledge are centered on engineering, manufacturing, management  and design. We research and study hardware problems through rational analysis, but this is clearly only part of the picture. Increasingly we have been drawn to dilemmas which are wider and more complex. Many difficulties in design turn out to be problems of context and the bigger system.

As one pressing example, our current economic crisis is a cause for major worries, both in the design professions and in small businesses. Here we explore and try to shed light on the dark corners of these issues: and also give some grounds for optimism. These 5 minute presentations will be thematically linked - but they represent individually different  views - not one orthodoxy or grand solution. The presentations for DINZ will continue with PART TWO on 25 February 2009 with following speakers: Rainer Seidel Networks and connectivity Chris Chambers - Drivers of the next wave / Linda Haemmerle - Design for the developing world / Aruna Shekar - Extended reach and empathics
