Te Ao Māhina. Wellington ZooReturn to the portfolio of Karl Wixon
Design of new nocturnal house for Wellington Zoo; included working with Te Atiawa (Te Kau o Poneke) to develop kaupapa Māori interpretation for Kiwi, Ruru (Morepork Owl, Herima (Duvaucels Gecko) and Tuatara. Te Ao Māhina is a 280sqm undeground facility built with a 5m high pre-stressed concrete arch, includes an interpretive area with audio visual media by Rachael Rakena and interpretive artwork (shown) by Gabrielle Belz. This leads into open habitat where vistors walk amongst the bush and kiwi. A world first. |
