About Alasdair Hood

Alasdair graduated with a Bachelor of Design from UNITEC Institute of Technology in 1998 where he gained recognition in the Best Design Awards Student Interior Category and the Interior Design Guild of New Zealand Scholarship Award.

After graduating Alasdair worked as a designer for JASMAX architects and was involved in award winning projects including the design for Deutsche Bank AG, winner of Best Commercial Interior at the DINZ Best Awards and an NZIA Local Award, before his departure at the beginning of 2001 to establish Vanillaspace.

Under Alasdair's leadership, Vanillaspace has developed a reputation for its rigorous interpretation of space combining innovative use of light with sophisticated hidden detailing to achieve comfortably inhabitable austerity. As a consequence Vanillaspace has regularly won recognition at both the DINZ Best Awards and the IES Lighting Council of New Zealand Awards, most recently winning the Best Residential Interior category at the 2005 Best Awards.

Vanillaspace is a multi-dimensional practice with expertise in interiors, light and furniture design across a range of project scales. Vanillaspace has experience with international clients and regional projects.

Alasdair has periodically lectured and tutored at UNITEC and AUT.

Alasdair is a professional member of the Designers Institute of New Zealand and currently sits on its governing council.
