About Carin Wilson

Carin's artistic and functional works have been recognised with several grants and awards (including QEII Arts Council and Arts Council of NZ grants and the Inaugural Toi Iho mark) and his work is held in public and private collections around the world. He holds an honorary Diploma in art and design and has assisted in the design and implementation of several tertiary art education programmes. With diverse influences ranging from the navaho proverb 'you can't wake a man who is pretending to be asleep' to the work of Miles Davis, Carl Sagan, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Ghandi and the Maori prophet Te Whiti, Carin is a designer and artist of considerable renown.n'I wanted to do what I do from the day a friend did me a great favour and gave me Irving Stones 'The Agony and the Ecstasy' to read. That narrative of the life of Michaelangelo sounded like a great way to make an interesting life. It took me ten years to summon the courage to follow Katherine Mansfield admonition to 'risk, risk everything'.nI work at a crossover between art, sculpture, design, architecture and interiors. I've never really understood the proposition that I should distinguish between these disciplines. I prefer to follow a practise paraphrased I think, by Jasper Johns when he said 'first I take something, then I add something, pretty soon I have something'. Its this mix of skill, intuition and a love of process that keeps it endlessly interesting.'n'I trust the power art has in shaping our future, and approach my work as if it might make a modest contribution. In my understanding as a maker, art is a practical expression of personal philosophy in daily practise.nThe proposition that the designer should sit somewhere between social philosopher and future forecaster is novel. But the challenge of producing relevant product in a world of almost fathomless choice will call on creative skills way beyond interpreting the technological capabilities of machinery and process. Even more elusive competencies like intuition and feeling will test the preconceptions of clients and designers will need to defend their convictions forcefully.nI love being able to say I am from New Zealand, Aotearoa. Being here is being us and proud of it. As we accept the privilege of framing ourselves through our own 'Pacific' eyes our relationship with the history, symbolism and imagery of this place forms a unique vernacular that seals its own identifiable stamp on our work. Our goal is to reflect this essence in every commission and we revel in the rich rewards of collaboration with professional colleagues where we can enjoy a stimulating crossover with space planning and organisational dynamics.nWas that risk worth taking? Does the life measure up to the promise? The answer is a most emphatic yes. This is definitely the best game in town.
