About Stephen Cashmore

Stephen Cashmore is the principal of Cashmore & Colleagues, an Auckland based design consultancy established in 1990 specialising in architectural conservation and interior design.

Stephen's design and decorative philosophy starts with the building being adapted or interior being decorated. He always uses the architectural or decorative vocabulary of the original period as a reference point, to arrive at a design that suits the client's brief.

"We don't put our grandmothers in mini-skirts - so why should we wrap our old buildings in today's garments. Granny will initially feel liberated but shortly thereafter very self conscious. Our job is to provide our clients who are often guardians of historic properties houses and interiors which suit the traditional streetscape and provide comfort, warmth, texture and detail. We delight in detail."

With this sensitivity/philosophy Stephen has designed substantial additions and alterations to period homes, or new classic houses, for many clients based in New Zealand and abroad.

As a port city, Auckland's historic housing stock well suits classic verandahed, shingled or weatherboarded houses from American or English maritime models.

Interior design projects reflect Stephen's own passion for comfort, understated elegance and texture. He is not afraid of colour and often uses traditional palettes to reinforce the use of spaces. Stephen regularly accommodates client's special furniture in new spaces, sources antiques or design custom-built furniture for special purpose and setting.

The redecoration or conservation of historic house interiors, private homes or nationally significant houses open to the public, is of special interest to Stephen. His extensive collection of period wallpaper fragments and architectural details, recovered from demolished or renovated buildings for over 30 years, is one of the most extensive in New Zealand. The wallpaper collection regularly provides inspiration for colour selection and can be used as a resource centre for clients who are considering authentic decorative solutions.
