The Designers Institute of New Zealand's mission is to have professional designers valued and rewarded for the contribution they make to the economic, cultural and social growth of New Zealand. This is achieved through encouraging the development of professional skills in the membership and by bringing together the different design disciplines under a common proposition that excellent design brings tangible benefits to its users. Other aims are to improve standards of professional service, increase demand for design excellence and generally increase the profile of design. Recent changes to the organisationThe Council and Secretariat have recently made large changes to the organisation and introduction of systems to improve the Professional delivery of services to its members. These include Strategic and Business Plan's to take the Institute forward. The underlying theme for this is to increase the awareness of the public to professional designers and design professionalism both nationally and internationally. Another way of putting this is to raise the public's consciousness of the benefits of design professionalism for themselves, the economy, the environment and their descendants. All this can be seen as a win win situation. The public benefits from an improved life style and environment and the designers reap dividends in financial rewards and job satisfaction. Lobbying on behalf of designersThe Designers Institute is recognised as the official voice of design in New Zealand. On behalf of its members it lobbies Government and has input into proposed changes to legislation affecting designers. A case in point is the recent bill to change the law regarding Copyright. Institute members having expert knowledge and experience together with our legal representatives have had and are still having discussions with the Ministry of Commerce to protect the interests of the Designers Institute members. Belonging to a professional organisation increases individual credibility and marketability in the design arena. Having Professional status is even better. The Institute maintains its integrity of Professional members by only admitting them after a thorough examination by their peers. Training sessions, seminars and items through PRODESIGN and the Institute's email news letters keep members informed about issues such as ethical standards and problems over contracts. The constitution has been carefully written to maintain the Institute's integrity and professional standing in the community. Being a member of the Designers Institute of New Zealand brings many benefits such as up to date information on events such as the Best Design Awards, the Dyson and Design Ambassador Awards and the Design in Business Awards. Other events such national and international design competitions, conferences, seminars, shows and visiting speakers are publicised through the Institute's email newsletter's and the web site.
