Congratulations to Dulux for winning Green Gold

14 May 2008

Dulux New Zealand won Green Gold at the 10th Wellington Region Gold Awards for business excellence last week.

The award recognises Dulux's successful introduction of environmentally sustainable practices at its paint manufacturing plant at Gracefield in the Hutt Valley.

Dulux General Manager Greg Warren says the win was a tribute to the drive and enthusiasm of Dulux's sustainability team, which had helped to initiate and implement change.

'Our staff have acted as advocates for sustainability and we are looking forward to more initiatives which will make a positive contribution to the environmental health of our community, Mr Warren said. Dulux has introduced initiatives ranging from downsizing fleet cars to investing $1million on a waste water treatment plant to collect all stormwater and water used in manufacture on their four-hectare site. The company is also focussed on making its products more sustainable. This includes launching a portable waste water treatment system for painting contractors.

Envirowash collects water from washing out paint brushes, rollers, tins and containers and can separate up to 60 litres of water from solid matter in just 20 minutes. The strained solids dry to a small inert lump that is safe for landfills, while the recycled water can be disposed directly onto the land or into drains.

In addition, the company's Enviro2 range of low odour paints are ideal for contractors wanting tenants to occupy refurbished premises, or for sufferers of asthma or allergies.

The annual Wellington Gold Awards recognise leading businesses in the Wellington region in categories ranging from workplace safety to creativity in film, media and content. Other finalists in the Green Gold category were fashion label Starfish, the Wellington Convention Centre and the YHA Wellington.

This latest win follows Dulux's success in 2007 when it won the Trailblazer Award (large business category) and Overall Sustainable Business for the Central Region in the annual awards run by the Sustainable Business Network.
