HOME New Zealand Designer of the Year Awards 2008

10 Apr 2008

As part of Eon's ethos to actively promote New Zealand design, we partnered with HOME New Zealand magazine to host their Designer of the Year Awards. We have had such a great response to the exhibition that we have arranged for it to stay on display in our showroom until Tuesday 15th of April. If you want to make your visit twice as productive, we recommend coming down on Saturday morning to indulge in the produce of the Britomart Farmers Market before visiting the exhibition. They have great coffee and pastries if you need to kick start your day! If you decide to visit on a weekday please remember we have complimentary customer valet parking on Galway Street, off Commerce Street.

CELEBRATING BUY KIWI MAD MONTH

For the past 100 years Kiwis have been encouraging other Kiwis to buy New Zealand made goods. The first organised campaign was a partnership between manufacturers and retailers and was quickly supported by government. Today's Buy Kiwi Made media campaign is turning 20 years old this year, and is celebrated over the month of April.

In New Zealand in 1931 after the Great Depression, the economy was trying to recover from a massive slump and something was urgently needed to lift the flagging spirits of the nation. Esther James was a woman of abundant talents; she was by turns, architect, inventor and New Zealand's first fashion model and came up with the idea of walking the entire length of the country wearing NZ made clothes and shoes, and eating NZ made foods. This would, she felt, highlight to all New Zealanders, and perhaps the rest of the world, just how good New Zealand made products were. Said Esther 'in spite of the grimness of the passing depression, we still had the spirit to get up and do things and make things " and to make and do them well.

In our modern age, Esther's spirit is continued by the raft of young and young at heart designers who uplift the human spirit with a myriad of visual yet functional treats that make our every day life more enjoyable. At Eon, our role is to provide customers with a central location that houses the widest selection of homeware, giftware, accessories and furniture from our talented designers. What ever you purchase, you can rest assured that you're investing into the future of New Zealand's creative industries. Click here to read more about the history of manufacturing in New Zealand the pioneering spirit of Esther James.

We look forward to your visit to our Britomart showroom soon,

from the team at Eon.
