Winner 2007 Dyson Product Design Award Stephen Smith - UK firm invests in cool design

1 Jul 2008

A 24-year-old industrial design graduate from Greenhithe will start a five-year contract as an egineer at Dyson's Research and Design Centre in Malmesbury, in England this month.

Stephen Smith was named New Zealand's top emerging product designer in the annual Dyson Product Design Awards and this is the first time Dyson has offered the winner employment.

Mr Smith's Arctis Skin is a cooling vest for athletes. It stabilises body temperature enabling the wearer to perform at peak levels for longer.

In Malmesbury, Smith will join a group of designers called the Blue Sky Team. "I understand the job will be highly creative and we will not be limited in our ideas - and we're tasked with coming up with concepts for the very first stage of pruduct development." Mr Smith says Dyson is a highly regarded company which 'takes innovation to another level so I feel both nervous and excited'.

Engineers and scientists make up a third of Dyson's employees.

The James Dyson Foundation runs design awards in 15 countries.
