Young kiwi designers get chance to take on the world with Design Lab

5 May 2008

Young Kiwi industrial designers are being given a chance to show the world how innovative they are - and win a six-month design internship with global home appliance giant Electrolux.

The company is calling for entries for its 2008 Design Lab competition, open to industrial design students from around the world.

They are being asked to come up with innovative ideas for home appliances for the internet generation, focusing on food storage, cooking and/or washing.

As well as helping to shape the future of home appliances, the competition winners and finalists will win significant prizes. First prize is 5000 and a six-month internship at one of Electrolux's global design centres. Second prize is 3000 and third prize is 2000.

Last year's competition was won by Lvente Szabó, of Hungary, who designed a washing machine that uses soap nuts, which grow on trees, rather than environmentally damaging laundry detergent.

Entries for this year's competition close on May 30.

Rosalie Davison of Electrolux New Zealand says the competition is a great opportunity for Kiwi design students to show the world just how creative and innovative they are.

"Our country is known for punching above its weight when it comes to new ideas and technology," says Davison. "Design Lab is now giving young New Zealand industrial designers an opportunity to really change the world of home appliances."

The first competition, held in 2003, was open to students of three design schools in Europe only. Since then Electrolux has developed the project to a global scale and opened it up to design students from around the world. The 2004 winners were from New South Wales with "Rockpool" - a waterless dishwasher.
